Biography:
Although known mainly for his connection with contemporary jazz and international music, Pavel Jany began his professional career as a classical guitarist and educator in the Czech republic In 1988, he moved to West Africa to pursue his music career, and to learn about West African and Afro-Brazilian music and culture. During his three year stay in Libreville/Gabon, he was teaching classical guitar in the National Conservatory of Gabon, and he was also working with many local and international artists.
After moving to the United States, Pavel began realizing his vision of an international jazz project. The result is an unique bossa nova, samba and Brazilian jazz ensemble, which is named after the title track of its first album - Ticket To Brasil. Pavel and his group have performed at a number of local and international events, including the Winnipeg Jazz Festival, Sioux Falls Jazz Festival, Hot Summer Jazz Festival, MN Winter Jazz Festival, MN Orchestra MusicFest, MN State Fair, and many more. The group has been an opening act for such renowned artists as Karrin Allyson and Cibelli, and continues to be featured on MN Public Radio, Jazz 88 KBEM, KFAI Radio, and Public Television. Pavel also traveled extensively to South America, and while his long musical journey encompasses many various styles, acoustic fusion based on Latin and Afro-Brazilian music remains one of his main domains.
Since 1991, Pavel lives in the Twin Cities. Apart from teaching and performing (either with his group or as a soloist), he is occasionally participating in various recording projects. He is also active in the education field giving performances, work shops and presentations through the Compas Artists in the Schools and through
the Global Arts Programs.
